My parents had a cat that would jump in the clothes dryer and try to curl up in the warm laundry when my mom was unloading. She got a phone call one day mid-unloading, and when she came back, he was asleep on a blanket in the dryer. She didn’t have the heart to move him :P

I once stayed with a family who had an enormous cat they had adopted as a stray. They named it Big Puddin’. He spent the majority of his day sleeping on top of the heating grate in the kitchen. Life is good.

Au contraire - the cat is acting as a heat transfer device, absorbing the heat from the vent and then delivering it directly to you, but only when you need it and not a moment before. If cat decides that you aren’t warm enough it will jump on you to transfer the heat. I could be wrong on that last assumption, and cat jumping on you is just an attempt to siphon off your excess heat so that it can be comfortable, allowing it to go elsewhere so that it can resume staring you down with the typical feline “fuck off” glare.

He’s not a lap cat. He will lay 1'-6" away from me, but not on my lap.

Despite being furry, cats prefer much warmer temperatures than we usually give them. Give your cat a good sunbeam or a heated box and he will stop blocking the vent.
